Virtual Storytelling

The Eiteljorg Museum will host the 2021 Indian Market and Festival online with showcases of juried artwork, performances and demonstrations.

The 29th annual Eiteljorg Museum Indian Market and Festival will be true to form with a display of gorgeous Native American art, the art competition and awards, and an array of performances, presentations and demonstrations. The only difference is the show, postponed until this year due to the pandemic, will be an all-virtual event from June 14 to 28.

Gilmore Scott (Diné (Navajo)), Ma’ii Bizo, bahané (Coyote’s Star Story), acrylic

“We have created a whole separate Indian Market and Festival page off our website, which will have profiles for each and every artist registered,” says Brandi Crocker, the museum’s public events coordinator. “They’ll be able to upload five images that are samples of what they have for sale.” The artists will also have a profile with biography, headshot and information on how to inquire about the artwork. Crocker adds, “We’re trying to get it as similar to the in-person event as possible even though it is virtual.”

Victoria McKinney (Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama), Past Time Patterns, pottery

The show will have the diversity in art that collectors have come to know with everything from baskets, jewelry, pottery, textiles, two-dimensional art and beadwork available to purchase. Among the approximately 100 artists participating are Le’Ana Asher, Tim Blueflint Ramel, Avis Charley, Alexa Rae Day, Grant Dial, Chase Earles, Peggy Fontenot, Emil Her May Horses, Kevin Horace, Faye Lone, Monica Raphael, Stephanie Sorbel, Matagi Sorensen, Jason Wesaw, Jennifer White and more.

Jennifer White (Arikara), Brother, acrylic on canvas

The awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 12, for all members of the Eiteljorg’s Friends of Indian Market. There will be nine division winners, a best of show, a youth prize, the Helen Cox Kersting Award and the purchase award. “This year we’ve added a patron’s choice award on the website,” says Crocker. “Anyone who shops at the market will be allowed to vote for their favorite piece of artwork.” Information on award winners will be available on the show website soon after the announcement, so collectors will have all the details on the winning pieces—aside from the patron’s choice, which will be announced at the end of the two weeks—before they make their purchases.

Artist Randy Kemp (Choctaw/Mvskoke-Creek/Euchee) will not only have his artwork available as part of the show, but also will host a storytelling performance.

There also will be a full schedule of virtual performances, demonstrations and more for visitors to enjoy each day of the market. Among the entertainers will be vocalist-guitarist Joanne Shenandoah (Wolf Clan of the Oneida Nation), Bizhiki Culture and Dance Company, and Native American reggae-rock band Innastate, and artist Randy Kemp (Choctaw/Mvskoke-Creek/Euchee) will have a storytelling performance. The events will be a mix of live and pre-recorded videos, so be sure to review details on how to watch.
